The Game

Who Wants to Be a Murderer? is a psychological horror game set in a TV game show straight out of the 90s. You'll face a series of challenges that will put your morality and sanity to the test.

I'm considering to work on a full-fledged version on Steam. To stay updated on the project and more, join the Discord.

Features

  • Unscripted rounds, non-linear narrative with 4 different endings
  • A ruthless yet fair AI, that makes decisions based on what happens during the show
  • 10-15 minutes playthrough
  • Replayability, it is impossible to see all the game content in just one run
  • Online leaderboard

Controls

You can play the game using only your mouse.

  • Left click to interact or going through dialogues.
  • ESC to show settings.

Warning

A bug is occurring frequently when starting a new run. The fix will be released at the end of the jam voting phase. In the meantime, just closing and reopening the game should fix the issue.

There are far too few "twisted game show" type games and this was definitely a good one. Really enjoyed this, well done! 10/10

This was a fun little horror game and I loved the whole Game Show concept of it.  Would love to see it built upon more and made into a longer game!  Lotsa fun, great job! 🖤

Thank you so much!

This was super unique and unsettling... Check it out!

Thank you!

10/10 game. I loved the gameshow aspect of it!

Thanks a lot!

I loved the whole game show aspect of this game it felt very refreshing! Some of the questions were so random though lmao and hunting for all 4 endings was fun! (3rd game in my 3-part video)

Thank you for playing it! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Okay, I have something real this time! I got an answer correct, but then the host told me it was wrong. The answer was "Ed Gein," and he even says that in his explaination.

Yes, it's a bug. I've already fixed that issue and a few others, but unfortunately, I can't release an update until the voting phase of the jam ends. Thanks anyway for the feedback!

The first playthrough worked fine. I lost the knife game and died. When I restarted, it froze up just after the introductions. =( I tried quitting and starting again, but that just made it freeze even earlier, before anything was said at all.

I downloaded the windows version, if that helps.

Love the concept, though!

Edit: I just noticed that you already addressed this so never mind lol

Thanks for the feedback! I've already fixed that issue and a few others, but unfortunately, I can't release an update until the voting phase of the jam ends. Appreciate you letting me know, though!

If you are considering making this into a full game, I think it would do very well, this is a very good demo, hope to see more!

Full Play 3 Endings (NO COmmentary)

(+1)

Thank you! I'm currently working on it, so hopefully,  there's plenty more fun stuff on the horizon!

Really good game, just let me know when you fix the bug so i can play it more time ^^

Thank you! Actually, I've already fixed it, but I can't update the game until the end of the jam voting phase. Make sure to follow me here on itch or join the discord to stay updated! :)

(+1)

definitely worth playing

Thanks!

(+1)

This game is a lot of fun, a little worried I guessed a good couple of the questions right lol

Haha, thank you!

(+1)

Great concept! Though i would have liked to have control of the dialogue instead of it running at its own pace... I'm a slow reader... Still though, FUN GAME!!

Thank you for the feedback! There's an option to disable dialogues auto-skip, but yes maybe I should have disabled it by default.

Hello. I purchased this Game and Playing with AutoTranslate with BepinEx (If these translation is not allowed, Let me know. Sorry)

In Korea, There are AfreecaTV (Platform of Streamer like Youtube) . I want to tranlate game and My streamer will play game(He already buy game but can not play for language issue).

But There are some issue in Tranlate and I need some help for you. Unlike English Language moves just slowly, Korean language moves too much that can not be recognized well. Is there any method to change these jittering effect?

If this great game will be translated, then many koreans will be interested. Thanks.

Thanks for reaching out! I’m thrilled to hear about the interest from the Korean community. I made this game for a game jam, so I didn’t even thought about localization. But in the final version I’d love to add more languages. If anyone’s interested in helping with the translation, feel free to  join us on discord.

I can also help you with a temporary fix to get your translation working with current version of the game

This was quite fun. The questions was particulary entertaining, haha

Thanks for playing!

I liked the idea of it, and the game is fun, but:

1. The glitch is really frustrating, but well you already put that warning in here, so I don't know if complaining about that is valid.

2. I got 2 endings, and they felt the same in well, the end! because the screen was basically the same, I thought they would be more rewarding, but not really...

Other than that, the game is really cool!! a full thing of this would be amazing! also in my opinion, playing it as a normal game and then being a murderer thing would be cool, I know that might be cliche right now, but it would be fun! I love those, but that's just personally

Thank you for the feedback and for playing! I already fixed that annoying bug, but unfortunately, I won’t be able to update the game until the jam voting phase ends (April 20th). I’m glad you found the game fun overall and I’ll consider your suggestions!

awesome! thanks for replying, I'll get back to play it at that time then, so I can try and get the remaining endings without the glitch :D

Just lovely a game for my sanity

Haha, thank you!

I saw Manly post this and chose to give it a try before watching his video. IM GLAD I DID! The only thing that would have made this game better is more time to develop the story! (BTW I SUCK AT READING)

Thank you so much! Yes, the story and tension escalate quite quickly right now, partly because I made the game in a very short time for the jam. In the final version of the game, I'll aim to improve and expand that aspect.

(+1)

It would be great if the game had more than one language.

(+1)

Thanks for the feedback! In the final version of the game, I'm planning to include support for multiple languages

Great! Thank you so much!

I really enjoyed this! Loved the style and the replayability!

Thank you so much! The ending cracked me up, I should have put that option disabled by default (you're not the only one who discovered it only later)

Does anyone know how to stop them from voting you out because I've done about 20 playthroughs and they vote me every time no matter who's left.

The other characters vote are based on your previous actions and their own morals.

Spoiler alert from here on out!!

You can survive the vote in different ways, depending on who's left in the game:

  • Talk to Richard before the vote, agree to his deal, and follow his lead in voting out the remaining participant.
  • Tell Sarah to stay in the game during the first break, and give a positive response to the morality question. Then, vote out the remaining participant.
  • If you've answered the second round question with a morally psoitive answer, there's less chance Edgar and Sarah will vote for you, while with a morally negative answer decreases the chance of Richard voting for you.
  • Even if you agree to Richard's deal and then betray him, there's a small chance of not being voted out (depends on who else is left and how you've played up to that point).

Really interesting game. I reminds me of the Weakest link ironically instead of Who wants to be a Millionaire. Keep it up.

Here's my channel for other games I have played. https://www.youtube.com/@Levont

Thanks for playing! Glad you found it interesting!

Fire GAME

Thanks!

Hey! My friend and loved watching the game from 8Bit-Ryan. We noticed that you got the answer wrong about the inspiration for Norman Bates. It was Ed Gein that was the inspiration, not Ted Bundy

Oh, thank you so much for letting me know! Yes, the game does have a few bugs and small errors. I hope to fix them in an upcoming update.

(+1)

Love the concept of this. Please do expand further on it! Has a great premise to it <3

Thank you so much! Oh, yes, I definitely intend to. Make sure to stay tuned!

A glitch occured while I was playing the game. After the 1st minigame 2 players tied for the loss and the game didn't know how to handle it. This caused a glitch where no one would say anything effectively soft locking the game.

Update: I managed to beat the game but honestly I didn't enjoy my time. The last minigame just felt too much for me even if the audience was just cardboard cutouts and with only 3 questions part of the fun in high scores is lost completely. Not to mention the online leaderboards just seem rigged since it doesn't explain how to get on the leaderboards so even if you get the maximum possible score it's not good enough. I honestly wish there was some sort of offline leaderboard so you could keep track of your own scores.

I'm sorry to hear about the glitch you encountered. Unfortunately, I made the game in less than 2 weeks for a game jam, so it currently has some bugs that I hope to fix once the voting phase is over. I understand that the final part may have been a bit too intense, even though I aimed to use a cardboard-style with very basic movements to evoke the feeling of a carnival game like whack-a-mole, to lighten up the intense situation.

Regarding the leaderboard, it's based on kills and counts the points earned in the last mini-game, plus points for eliminating other participants. It shows everyone with the same score because I never expected so many people to play it, and they essentially achieved the maximum score.

The game is definitely incomplete, and there are many things to improve and fix. Consider it more as a proof of concept. I hope to enhance and expand it into a fully-fledged game in the future.
